Court : Deepak Dev Caught For Plagiarism/Copyright Infringement

Deepak Dev was caught for plagiarising Canadian singer Loreena McKennitt's two songs - Caravanserai and The Mummer's Dance.
His song "Aaro Nee Aaro" in the movie Urumi is a copy of the below song.

But what I liked about the guy is that he did not deny that he was inspired by the song. And he is right that Urumi's "Aaro Nee Aaro" is not a note by note copy of Caravanserai. Currently the court has blocked the movie from releasing in other languages. Further proceedings are going on.

Hope this would hamper the ever increasing problem of plagiarism in the entertainment field in India - like the new copy by M G Sreekumar! He lifted the tune for Madhavettanennum song in the movie Arabiyum Ottakavum P Madhavan Nairum off Amr Diab's song Rohy Mertahlak. Sangathikal onnum vidaathe copy cheythittundu :P

MG Sreekumar-inte sangathi eppo pokkumo entho!

When I first heard 'Caravanserai' and 'Mummer's Dance' I felt they were quite like Indian Classical; I think we should copyright all the 'Raagas' and 'Taals', which are invaluable research of our ancient Musicians, the Trinity and Hindustani composers. Out of my own experience, I can very well place these two songs in to one of our Raagas. There are many many Indian Cinema songs composed in these type of tunes since long. If this is Celtic then it has borrowed a lot from Indian Classical ...

The Raagas and Taals are in fact universal. They just have different names for them - Scales and Rhythms. For example, we have Shankarabharanam, they have Major scale. Same thing, different names. But like you said, their music system is influenced by ours, just like we are influenced by their music.
You can observe this in the music created by A R Rahman, for example. Which is not only fine, but creative too. But that does not justify lifting whole songs made by other artists and passing them off as own creations, like what Deepak Dev has done here.

Things like these demotivates artists like me who look upto Deepak as one of the most talented composers in South India.

Thanks for your opinion :)
